MOGADISHU, Somalia – In a dramatic operation on Monday, Somali federal forces raided a residence in the Jazeera settlement of the Lower Shabelle region.
Local reports indicate the area—long known as a hotbed of territorial disputes between the federally administered Banaadir region and the SouthWest state’s Lower Shabelle authorities—was being used for troop recruitment by the regional government.
Security sources confirmed to Arlaadi Media that the raid led to a brief but intense clash. At least two soldiers lost their lives and several others sustained injuries during the skirmish.
As of now, neither the federal forces nor regional officials have issued formal statements regarding the deadly security incident.
“Local officials are urging calm as investigations continue and further details are expected in the coming days,” Ali Ibrahim Mohamed, a resident, told Arlaadi Media Network.
The Jazeera settlement, a coastal community, has been at the center of long-running tensions between the competing administrations.
While Banaadir maintains federal control, Lower Shabelle falls under the authority of the SouthWest state—a division that has fueled occasional clashes and fueled uncertainty among local residents.
Observers say that despite the violent encounter, the federal government’s decisive action reflects its commitment to restoring stability in contested areas.
Analysts believe that increased dialogue and strengthened inter-regional cooperation will be key to easing the persistent disputes over territorial control in Somalia.
