MOGADISHU, Somalia – The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission of Somalia aka NIEBC Somalia has announced the opening of registration for new political associations.

The registration period will run from January 20 to March 31, 2025, and will be offered free of charge. This initiative marks a significant step in the country’s preparations for the forthcoming direct elections.

Speaking at a press briefing in Mogadishu on Monday, the Commission’s Chief, Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, emphasized the importance of the process in fostering political participation.

He also unveiled plans to demarcate polling stations in the coming week, an essential measure to ensure voters have clear access to designated voting locations during the elections.

“This initiative is designed to encourage inclusivity and to provide all political groups with an equal opportunity to participate in the democratic process,” Hassan stated.

He expressed confidence in the commission’s ability to execute its mandate effectively, emphasizing transparency as a core principle.

However, the announcement has not been without controversy. Opposition leaders, including former Somali presidents, have expressed concerns over the commission’s impartiality. Critics argue that questions regarding the neutrality of the NIEBC could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

The concerns come amidst a heated political climate, with some opposition figures questioning whether the commission can remain unbiased given the stakes involved in the upcoming elections. They have called for greater oversight and reforms to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

Despite these challenges, the NIEBC’s announcement represents a critical step forward in Somalia’s journey towards strengthening its democratic institutions.

However, the observers will be closely monitoring the registration process and the demarcation of polling stations to gauge the commission’s commitment to fairness and transparency.
