MOGADISHU, Somalia – In a landmark move to modernize the nation’s financial landscape, Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, has launched the Somali Payment Switch (SPS).
This innovative platform is set to transform financial transactions by enabling secure, efficient, and accessible digital payment services across the country.
The launch comes as Somalia continues its efforts to rebuild and strengthen its financial and economic institutions after decades of conflict and instability. As the country embraces digital transformation, the Somali Payment Switch is a critical step toward aligning Somalia with global financial practices and fostering economic resilience.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Barre emphasized the pivotal role of the SPS in upgrading Somalia’s payment infrastructure. The system, developed in collaboration with Somali banks, is designed to facilitate seamless digital transactions, empowering citizens and businesses alike.
“This marks a significant milestone for our financial sector,” stated the Prime Minister. “The Somali Payment Switch not only improves the efficiency of payments but also strengthens financial inclusion by making modern banking services accessible to more people.”
The SPS initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize Somalia’s financial ecosystem, which includes initiatives to combat financial exclusion in rural areas, promote cashless transactions, and ensure regulatory compliance in line with international standards.
By encouraging digital payments, the government aims to reduce the risks associated with cash-based economies, such as fraud, inefficiency, and limited scalability.
Prime Minister Barre further highlighted the importance of adopting advanced payment technologies, noting their potential to drive economic growth, attract investment, and stimulate innovation.
“Technology is a key enabler for economic progress. By embracing digital solutions, Somalia is laying the foundation for a sustainable and inclusive economy,” he added.
The Somali Payment Switch is expected to enhance trust in digital transactions and foster collaboration between local banks, financial institutions, and businesses.
As a result, the system is poised to create new opportunities for economic activity and set the stage for a more robust and interconnected financial sector in Somalia.
This initiative underscores Somalia’s commitment to leveraging technology to achieve sustainable development and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
However, the federal government of Somalia said it hopes that the successful implementation of the SPS will serve as a model for further digital innovations across various sectors.
