MOGADISHU, Somalia – The SouthWest State of Somalia has announced a call for investments in the development of the Marka (Merca) seaport, a crucial infrastructure located in southeastern Somalia.
The port, classified as a jetty-class facility, boasts a harbor and a pier that extends into the Somali Sea, offering significant opportunities to enhance regional trade and economic connectivity.
Speaking in Marka, Hassan Abdiqadir Mohamed, the region’s Security Minister, emphasized the strategic importance of the port to the SouthWest State’s economy.
He urged local communities, business leaders, and international investors to support its development and capitalize on its potential to transform the region into a thriving trade hub.
“Marka port holds immense promise for boosting trade within the region and beyond. By investing in its development, we can unlock new economic opportunities, create jobs, and improve livelihoods for our people. This is not just an investment in infrastructure but an investment in the future of our region,” Minister Hassan said.
Currently classified as a jetty-class port, the Marka seaport serves as a vital connection point for goods transported between Somalia and other regions. However, the facility requires upgrades to meet international standards and accommodate larger vessels.
Enhanced infrastructure, including expanded docking capacity, modernized facilities, and improved logistics systems, is expected to position the port as a competitive gateway for imports and exports in the Horn of Africa.
The SouthWest State’s government has identified the Marka port as a priority project in its economic development agenda. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to stabilize the region, promote local industries, and strengthen Somalia’s position as a key player in regional trade.
Community leaders in Marka have expressed support for the government’s call, highlighting the port’s historical significance and potential to revitalize the local economy.
“Marka has always been a center of trade and culture. Rebuilding and modernizing the port will restore its legacy and bring prosperity to our people,” said Ahmed Sheikh, a local elder.
The SouthWest State government is actively engaging with stakeholders to secure the necessary funding and technical expertise for the project. It is also exploring partnerships with regional and international entities to accelerate the port’s development.
Investors and interested parties are invited to collaborate with the SouthWest State’s leadership to realize the full potential of the Marka seaport and contribute to the economic transformation of the region.
