MOGADISHU, Somalia – Sweden government has formally reiterated its strong commitment to supporting Somalia federal government, particularly the South West regional state, which continues to face significant humanitarian needs and the devastating effects of climate-related crises.
“In a time of heightened challenges, Sweden’s support remains crucial to addressing both immediate and long-term issues,” Sweden’s Ambassador to Somalia, Joachim Waern stated.
Speaking exclusively to Arlaadi Media Network at its headquarters in Mogadishu, Ambassador Waern highlighted Sweden’s ongoing role in assisting Somalia.
The ambassador underscored the importance of responding to the urgent humanitarian needs, such as food insecurity, displacement, and lack of access to basic services, while also considering the broader impacts of climate change.
He pointed out that the repeated cycles of droughts, floods, and other climate-related disasters have left the Somali population in a state of vulnerability.
“We are deeply committed to supporting Somalia through this turbulent period, with a focus on the South West state, which has been particularly affected by the current challenges,” Ambassador Waern said.
“However, while we focus on immediate relief, we must not overlook the importance of prevention. It is vital for both the federal government and regional states to adopt early intervention measures to mitigate the risks before they develop into full-scale crises.”
Sweden’s government has been a long-time partner in addressing Somalia’s development needs, focusing on humanitarian aid, climate resilience, and institutional support.
Sweden is actively involved in efforts aimed at building Somalia’s capacity to manage climate-induced shocks, particularly in the South West state, where severe droughts have led to widespread displacement and food shortages.
Ambassador Waern stressed that long-term solutions are necessary to ensure sustainable progress, urging Somalia’s leaders to adopt policies that emphasize climate adaptation and disaster preparedness.
He also emphasized the need for collaboration between the federal government, regional states, and international partners to strengthen Somalia’s resilience in the face of both humanitarian and environmental challenges.
The ambassador’s remarks come at a time when Somalia is grappling with the consequences of prolonged climate change effects.
Recurrent droughts have dried up water sources, leading to massive livestock losses and severe food insecurity, while flash floods in some areas have displaced thousands of families.
Despite these challenges, Sweden remains one of the leading donors for Somalia’s humanitarian efforts, providing both financial and technical support.
“Preventing crises requires us to take action well before the worst happens,” said Waern. “This means investing in early warning systems, strengthening local capacities, and improving the overall governance structures. By doing so, we can avoid the loss of life and property that often accompanies such disasters.”
Sweden has already contributed to various projects in Somalia aimed at improving climate resilience and food security, but Ambassador Waern’s comments stress the need for a more integrated and forward-looking approach to disaster management.
As the international community continues to focus on immediate humanitarian assistance, Sweden’s commitment remains focused on helping Somalia build a more resilient future, one that can withstand the shocks of climate change and ensure sustainable growth for future generations.
