MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali federal legislator Dr. Abdillahi Hashi Abib has raised concerns over the Federal Government of Somalia’s alleged breach of the United States-Somalia Debt Relief Agreement, a move he warns could put $1 billion in canceled debt at risk of termination, Arlaadi Media reports.
In a statement on Sunday, Dr. Abib emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “The agreement, signed on August 24, 2024, by the U.S. Ambassador to Somalia and the Somali Minister of Finance, could now be revoked.”
The agreement was a significant milestone in Somalia’s economic recovery efforts, enabling the country to clear its external debt and qualify for international financial support.
The debt relief initiative was part of a broader framework under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative, which Somalia had been working towards for years.
However, Dr. Abib, who recently was expelled from the parliament over alleged lack of attendance, did not provide specific details on how the Somali government allegedly violated the agreement.
His remarks have sparked concerns about the potential consequences for Somalia’s economic stability and its ability to secure future financial assistance from international lenders.
Meanwhile, there has been no official response from the U.S. government, the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu, or the Somali federal government regarding the allegations.
The silence from both parties leaves uncertainty about the status of the agreement and whether any corrective measures are being considered.
Economic analysts warn that if the U.S. were to withdraw from the agreement, it could severely impact Somalia’s financial credibility, deterring investors and delaying ongoing development projects.
Somalia has been relying on international debt relief and grants to rebuild its economy after decades of conflict and instability.
The Somali government has previously pledged its commitment to economic reforms, including fiscal discipline and transparency, as part of the conditions for debt relief.
Any violation of these terms could have significant repercussions on the Horn Africa country’s long-waiting economic progress.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on Washington and Mogadishu for an official statement clarifying the status of the agreement and the potential next steps. Observers anticipate that further diplomatic engagements may be necessary to resolve any concerns and prevent a major financial setback for Somalia.
