NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenyan President William Ruto and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a high-level diplomatic call to address the growing security threat posed by Al-Shabaab in Somalia, according to an official statement released Tuesday.
During the discussion, President Ruto emphasized “the necessity of a united approach from both countries to address this threat, underscoring that collaboration is essential for national security and regional stability.”
The talks come amid a surge in attacks by the Al-Qaeda-linked terror group Al-Shabaab, despite intensified counterterrorism efforts by the administration of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The militant group has continued to launch deadly assaults, challenging the Somali government’s campaign to reclaim territories and disrupt their operations.
Kenya, a key regional player in the fight against terrorism, has repeatedly called for stronger international cooperation to curb the threat posed by Al-Shabaab, which has carried out cross-border attacks in Kenya and destabilized parts of Somalia.
The U.S. has long been a strategic security partner in the region, providing military support, intelligence sharing, and counterterrorism assistance to Somalia and its allies.
The latest diplomatic engagement signals a renewed commitment to confronting the escalating violence in the Horn of Africa.
“Further discussions are expected between Kenyan, U.S., and Somali officials in the coming weeks to explore coordinated measures aimed at tackling the persistent security challenge,” a diplomatic sources furthermore told Arlaadi Media.
