MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has abruptly returned to Mogadishu from Adale following reports that Al-Shabaab militants seized control of Masaajid Cali Gaduud on Wednesday, sources confirmed to Arlaadi Media Network.
According to sources, the president’s swift return was triggered by an “alarming security development” as the militant group intensified its offensive in the Middle Shabelle region, which borders the capital.
The escalating situation has raised concerns over the security of Mogadishu and its surrounding areas, according to security sources and officials.
Al-Shabaab militants reportedly overran Masaajid Cali Gaduud after launching a coordinated assault on Somali military positions, forcing government troops to retreat.
The group’s advance in Middle Shabelle comes amid an ongoing offensive by Somali forces, backed by local militias and international partners, aimed at reclaiming key territories from the insurgents.
