MOGADISHU, Somalia – Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire has expressed deep disappointment over Al-Shabab’s capture of Masaajid Cali Gaduud in the Middle Shabelle region, calling it “a disheartening setback for the soldiers who sacrificed to liberate the city two years ago.”
In a statement posted on his social media account, Khaire urged President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to demonstrate decisive leadership, rise above political divisions, and convene a national conference to mobilize support for a unified military strategy against the Al-Qaeda-linked group.
He emphasized the urgent need for a national consensus on security measures to prevent further territorial losses to Al-Shabab, which continues to launch offensives against government-held areas.
The fall of Masaajid Cali Gaduud underscores the persistent security challenges facing Somalia, despite ongoing military campaigns aimed at weakening the militant group.
The region, which has been a strategic battleground, was initially liberated by Somali forces with support from international partners, including the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
However, Al-Shabab has repeatedly attempted to regain control over key towns, exploiting political divisions and security gaps.
Khaire’s remarks reflect growing concerns among Somali political and security analysts who warn that without a comprehensive, well-coordinated military and political response, the militant group will continue to pose a significant threat to national stability.
He stressed that unifying the country’s fragmented security efforts and prioritizing military funding and logistical support are essential to securing lasting peace.
The former prime minister also called on Somali citizens, political stakeholders, and international allies to stand together in supporting government forces, urging immediate action to bolster frontline troops and prevent further territorial losses.
However, Khaire’s appeal adds to the mounting pressure on the administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to reassess its counterterrorism strategy and reinforce military operations to neutralize AlQaeda-linked terror group Al-Shabab’s influence across the country.
