KAMPALA, Uganda – Somalia and Uganda have signed a series of new agreements aimed at deepening cooperation across key sectors, including immigration, education, sports, and security. The deals were finalized during the second Somalia-Uganda Trade and Investment Forum, which opened this week in Kampala.
Somalia’s Minister of Education, Culture and Higher Education, Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir, Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail “Fartaag,” and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hamza Adan Xadow, signed the agreements on behalf of the Somali government.
Ugandan officials signed on behalf of their government, in a move both sides described as a major step toward strengthening bilateral relations and expanding trade partnerships.
The Kampala forum also drew senior Somali officials, including Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Yusuf Mohamed Aden, Somalia’s Ambassador to Uganda Fardowsa Mohamed Qanyare, and Director General of Immigration and Citizenship Mustafa Sheikh Ali Dhuxulow.
Business leaders from both countries joined the talks, which focused on promoting private-sector investment and cross-border trade.
Officials say a separate labour agreement is in the works, designed to safeguard workers’ rights and streamline access to legal employment between the two countries. The two governments agreed that the next edition of the Trade and Investment Forum will take place in Somalia in 2027.
