MOGADISHU — Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has launched the first phase of an emergency response programme for families affected by drought in the northern regions of Sool, Sanaag and Togdheer.
SoDMA Chairman Mahmoud Moalim Abdulle and the Minister of Relief and Disaster Management for the North East State, Mohamed Diiriye Farah, jointly inaugurated the operation in Adhicadeeye.
The initiative is expected to provide assistance to 7,000 families facing worsening humanitarian needs linked to prolonged dry conditions, according to officials.
The operation is part of wider government efforts to support vulnerable communities affected by drought and improve coordination among authorities involved in humanitarian response.
Officials said the programme will focus on reaching households most in need as Somalia continues to contend with recurring drought and other climate-related emergencies that have placed additional pressure on food security and livelihoods.
The launch comes as federal and regional authorities seek to strengthen early response mechanisms and coordinate relief efforts before drought conditions further deteriorate.
