MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali National University has inaugurated a new ICT laboratory at its Gaheyr campus, expanding access to digital learning and practical technology training for students.

The facility was donated and fully equipped by Hormuud Salaam Foundation with 34 computers, interactive touchscreen boards, speakers and other equipment for ICT-based teaching and training.

Somali education officials and university administrators said the laboratory is expected to strengthen teaching and learning while giving students greater opportunities to develop practical digital skills relevant to Somalia’s growing technology sector.

The laboratory was inaugurated by Education Minister Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir, Somali National University President Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud Mohamed and Hormuud Salaam Foundation Chairman Abdullahi Nur Osman.

The initiative is part of Hormuud Salaam Foundation’s broader support for education and digital learning in Somalia. Hormuud Telecom says its wider digital infrastructure serves more than 4 million customers, underscoring the growing role of technology and digital services in the Somali economy.

For the university, the new facility provides an opportunity to move beyond classroom-based instruction toward more practical, technology-focused learning as demand grows for digital skills among young Somalis.

The investment also highlights the role of partnerships between Somalia’s private sector and educational institutions in expanding access to modern learning infrastructure.
