ARUSHA, Tanzania — Somalia’s House of the People Speaker Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama met with the President of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Joseph Ntakirutimana, in Arusha to discuss stronger parliamentary cooperation and regional integration.
The meeting focused on strengthening ties between legislative institutions and supporting greater cooperation among East African countries.
The two speakers emphasized the role of parliamentary cooperation in promoting peace, stability and sustainable development across the East African Community.
They also discussed how deeper regional integration could create opportunities for Somalia, particularly in trade, economic cooperation, movement of people and broader regional engagement.
Somalia joined the East African Community in March 2024, becoming the bloc’s eighth partner state. Its membership has opened avenues for greater integration into regional trade and economic frameworks.
Speaker Abdulkadir was accompanied by MP Ismail Eid Mohamed, Secretary-General of the House of the People Abdirahman Mohamed Abdulle “Jaabiri” and Somalia’s Ambassador to Tanzania and the EAC, Ilyas Ali Hassan.
The talks come as Somalia increases its engagement with EAC institutions, including parliamentary forums, as it works to strengthen its participation in regional political and economic affairs.
