MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has met Türkiye’s newly appointed ambassador to Somalia, Ferhat Alkan, in Mogadishu to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in key sectors.
The talks focused on Türkiye’s support for Somalia’s reconstruction, infrastructure development, economic growth and security, as the two countries seek to deepen their longstanding partnership.
The meeting comes as Alkan begins his diplomatic mission in Somalia. He assumed his post on Sept. 21, having previously served as Türkiye’s ambassador to Mozambique. He began his diplomatic career in 2001 and has held various positions in Türkiye’s foreign service, including postings in Afghanistan, the United States and China.
Somalia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hassan Mohamed Ali, known as Nadaara, received copies of Alkan’s credentials on Sept. 30, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to expanding cooperation in security, trade, development and education.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud subsequently received Alkan’s credentials, alongside those of the European Union’s new ambassador, László Máthé, in Mogadishu on Oct. 1.
Türkiye has been a major partner in Somalia’s reconstruction and institutional development, providing assistance in infrastructure, education, health care and security. The two countries have also strengthened defense and economic cooperation, including through an agreement signed in 2024 aimed at supporting Somalia’s maritime security and developing its naval capabilities.
Ankara has also played a diplomatic role in the Horn of Africa, including facilitating talks between Somalia and Ethiopia that resulted in the Ankara Declaration in December 2024.
The latest diplomatic engagement reflects ongoing efforts by Mogadishu and Ankara to build on their bilateral partnership as Somalia pursues security, economic development and state-building priorities.
