MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s federal parliament on Wednesday began the first reading of the government’s proposed 2027 national budget, valued at approximately $1.259 billion, during a joint session of the House of the People and the Senate in the capital Mogadishu.

Finance Minister Bihi Iman Igge presented the proposed spending plan and responded to questions from lawmakers as parliament began reviewing the government’s financial priorities for the coming year.

Following the presentation, the finance committees of both parliamentary chambers were tasked with examining the proposal and preparing it for a second reading.

Parliamentary sittings were suspended for two weeks to allow modernization work to be completed, according to the information provided.

The budget review is part of the federal parliament’s oversight of government spending and the national financial planning process. The proposal will proceed through further parliamentary scrutiny before lawmakers consider its approval.
