Somalia Seeks Sustained U.S. Support for Fight Against Al-Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia and the United States have discussed strengthening their strategic defence and security partnership as Mogadishu continues its campaign against militant groups and efforts to reinforce national security institutions.

Somalia’s Minister of Defence, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, met on Saturday with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Ruth Anne Stevens-Klitz in Mogadishu for discussions focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in defence and security.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of continued American support for Somalia’s efforts to combat militant groups and address security threats affecting the country and the wider region.

The discussions come as Somalia continues to strengthen its security forces and advance government-led operations against Al-Shabaab, which remains a major security challenge despite sustained military operations.

U.S. Support Remains Central to Somalia’s Security Efforts

The United States has been among Somalia’s principal international security partners, providing military training, equipment, intelligence cooperation and operational support to Somali forces.

American assistance has particularly supported the development of specialized Somali military capabilities, including the Danab Special Forces, which have played a prominent role in counterterrorism operations.

The latest meeting follows a series of engagements between Somali security officials and Stevens-Klitz since she assumed her diplomatic responsibilities in Mogadishu in 2026.

On Oct. 20, Somali National Army Commander Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud also met with the U.S. diplomat to discuss military cooperation, training and capacity-building for the national armed forces.

Somalia’s Security Transition and International Partnerships

The meeting also comes amid broader discussions about Somalia’s ability to assume greater responsibility for its national security as international security arrangements evolve.

Somalia continues to depend on cooperation with international partners while seeking to strengthen the operational capabilities, institutional effectiveness and sustainability of its own security forces.

The United States has maintained its counterterrorism partnership with Mogadishu, although questions surrounding the long-term financing of international security operations and Somalia’s growing security responsibilities remain significant.

For the Somali government, sustaining international security partnerships while building stronger national institutions remains an important part of its broader security strategy.

The latest engagement between Fiqi and Stevens-Klitz underscores the continued importance both governments attach to their defence relationship. However, the public announcement did not disclose specific new military agreements, funding commitments or operational arrangements arising from the meeting.
