HARGEISA, Somaliland – In a significant diplomatic move, Somaliland President Abdirahman Irro has embarked on his first official visit to the UAE since assuming office.

Highlighting the importance of the visit, the UAE dispatched a private jet to transport the President and his delegation, a gesture that underscores the strong ties between the two sides.

The relationship between Somaliland and the UAE has deepened in recent years, particularly through the UAE’s strategic investments in Somaliland’s infrastructure and economic development.

Notably, the Berbera Port, a cornerstone project funded and managed by Dubai Ports World (DP World), has transformed into a vital trade hub connecting Somaliland, Ethiopia, and the broader Horn of Africa region.

Additionally, the Berbera Corridor—a newly developed road linking the port to Ethiopia’s vast market—is expected to enhance regional trade and significantly boost Somaliland’s economy. President Cirro’s visit is expected to include high-level discussions on trade, investment, and development cooperation.

Analysts predict that the talks will focus on expanding the scope of UAE investments in Somaliland, particularly in sectors such as logistics, agriculture, energy, and education. The visit also offers an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic relations and explore new avenues for bilateral collaboration.

During his trip, President Cirro is anticipated to meet with senior UAE officials, including key figures in government and business. These meetings aim to solidify existing partnerships and identify new projects that could benefit both sides.

Observers note that this visit could mark the beginning of an enhanced phase of economic and political engagement between Somaliland and the UAE.

“The UAE’s interest in Somaliland is seen as part of its broader strategy to establish a strong foothold in the Horn of Africa, a region of growing geopolitical and economic significance,” one observer said.

For Somaliland, fostering a robust partnership with the UAE is crucial for its aspirations of economic growth and international recognition.

This historic visit highlights the evolving dynamics of Somaliland’s foreign relations and its efforts to position itself as a key player in regional trade and development.
