MOGADISHU – Somalia’s federal government has taken a significant step in strengthening its diplomatic ties with Syria by sending a formal letter to the country’s new administration.
The move underscores Somalia’s support for the “changes taking place” in Syria, according to Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Minister Fiqi expressed optimism about the future of relations between the two nations. He revealed that Somalia is eager to hold a “cordial meeting” with Syria’s new Foreign Minister, Asaad Hassan al-Shaybani, to discuss further cooperation and mutual interests.
The Somali Foreign Minister also highlighted Syria’s historical solidarity with Somalia during a critical period in the Horn of Africa nation’s history.
“Syria was the only Arab country that allowed Somali passport holders to enter its territory without a visa after the collapse of the central Somali government in 1991, and it welcomed Somali citizens,” he noted.
This gesture of goodwill and support by Syria during Somalia’s time of need has left a lasting impression, and the Somali government’s recent outreach reflects its intent to rekindle and strengthen these ties.
As both nations navigate new chapters in their histories, this engagement is seen as a promising step toward deeper cooperation and solidarity.
