MOGADISHU, Somalia – Opposition politicians from Somalia’s South West State, along with federal legislators representing the region, have raised serious concerns over what they describe as “ongoing arbitrary arrests and illegal political changes” in the interim capital city Baidoa.
In a statement released following a meeting in Mogadishu on Monday evening, the opposition leaders accused the federal government of inaction in addressing the situation.
They warned that the escalating political tensions could undermine stability in the region, particularly as speculation grows over the upcoming indirect elections.
The opposition figures emphasized the need for greater transparency and adherence to democratic principles to ensure a fair electoral process.
They urged the federal government to intervene and prevent further erosion of political freedoms in Baidoa, which has been a hotspot for political disputes in recent months.
The concerns come amid a broader debate over governance and rule of law in South West State, with opposition leaders demanding accountability and calling for an end to what they see as politically motivated arrests. The federal government has yet to officially respond to the accusations.
