BAIDOA, Somalia – President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen joined dignitaries, officials, and citizens in the interim capital city Baidoa on Monday to celebrate the 129th anniversary of the Adwa Victory, a historic triumph that marked Ethiopia’s resistance against colonial rule.
The grand commemoration, themed “Adwa: African Victory,” paid tribute to the legendary Battle of Adwa, fought on March 2, 1896, when Ethiopian forces decisively defeated the Italian army, preventing the colonization of their homeland. The victory remains a powerful symbol of African resilience, unity, and the fight against oppression.
The event in Baidoa, the administrative capital of South West State, drew a diverse crowd, including government officials, traditional elders, scholars, and members of the Ethiopian community in Somalia. Attendees reflected on the significance of the battle and its lasting impact on African history and sovereignty.
Speaking at the occasion, President Laftagareen emphasized the importance of the Adwa Victory in inspiring African nations in their struggles for freedom.
“This historic triumph is not just an Ethiopian victory; it is a victory for all Africans,” he said. “Adwa teaches us the value of unity and determination in the face of adversity.”
The celebration featured cultural performances, speeches from dignitaries, and discussions on the lessons of Adwa for contemporary Africa.
Speakers highlighted Ethiopia’s role in resisting colonial rule and how its success became a beacon of hope for other African nations seeking independence in the 20th century.
Ethiopia’s victory at Adwa remains one of the most significant anti-colonial triumphs in African history. Under the leadership of Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul, Ethiopian forces repelled Italian expansionist ambitions, securing the country’s sovereignty and inspiring future liberation movements across the continent.
However, the commemoration in Baidoa underscored the strong historical and cultural ties between Somalia and Ethiopia. In recent years, the two neighboring nations have engaged in diplomatic, economic, and security cooperation, fostering closer relations despite past challenges.
