MOGADISHU, Somalia – Federal legislator Sadiq Abdullahi Abdi has called on the Turkish government to enhance transparency in its dealings with Somalia, warning that non-disclosure of agreements could erode public trust and lead to widespread concerns over sovereignty.
In an exclusive interview with Arlaadi Media Network, the lawmaker emphasized the need for clarity in Türkiye’s engagements with Somalia, particularly in agreements involving economic cooperation, infrastructure projects, and military partnerships.
He cautioned that secrecy surrounding such agreements could fuel public skepticism and raise fears that Somali national interests are being compromised.
“Opaque agreements risk alienating the Somali people,” MP Sadiq stated. “Any bilateral deal, especially one that impacts national assets and strategic resources, must be subject to public scrutiny and parliamentary oversight.”
The remarks come amid ongoing discussions between Somalia and Türkiye regarding key sectors, including security cooperation and investment in critical infrastructure.
Türkiye has been a major ally of Somalia, providing military training, economic aid, and development support. However, growing concerns over the perceived lack of transparency in certain agreements have sparked debate among Somali lawmakers and civil society organizations.
MP Sadiq further urged Türkiye to avoid any actions that could be interpreted as prioritizing foreign interests over Somalia’s sovereignty and long-term economic well-being.
“The Somali people must be reassured that these agreements serve their best interests and are not dictated by external priorities,” he added.
While Türkiye has played a vital role in Somalia’s reconstruction efforts, calls for transparency and inclusive decision-making continue to gain traction. Lawmakers like Sadiq Abdikariim are advocating for a framework that ensures all foreign agreements undergo thorough legislative review, preventing potential missteps that could undermine national sovereignty.
Neither the Somali government nor Turkish authorities have officially responded to the legislator’s concerns, but analysts suggest that increased scrutiny over foreign agreements may lead to broader discussions on governance and accountability in Somalia’s international partnerships.
