MOGADISHU, Somalia – Al-Shabaab militants have reportedly entered the strategic town of Adan Yabaal in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region following a major coordinated attack early Wednesday morning, marking one of the most significant territorial gains for the group since Somali forces launched a major offensive in mid-2022.
The assault began at dawn, with militants storming the town from multiple fronts. According to initial accounts, intense clashes erupted between the attackers and Somali government troops stationed in the town, supported by local clan militias.
Witnesses and security sources report heavy gunfire lasting for hours and resulting in casualties on both sides, though exact figures remain unavailable due to ongoing fighting and disrupted communications.
Adan Yabaal, located about 245 kilometers north of Mogadishu, is considered a critical military outpost for Somali forces in the region. It served as a key operational base for counter-insurgency campaigns following its liberation from Al-Shabaab in December 2022.
In a statement released by its media wing, Al-Shabaab claimed full control of the town and its surrounding areas. While this claim has yet to be independently verified, two well-placed security sources confirmed to Arlaadi Media Network that government troops and allied militias had retreated in the face of overwhelming militant pressure.
Residents contacted in nearby villages also reported that the black flag of Al-Shabaab had been raised in the town center by mid-morning.
“If confirmed, this is the most strategically significant loss for government forces since the launch of operations to reclaim territories from Al-Shabaab nearly three years ago,” said a regional security analyst who asked not to be named due to safety concerns.
The fall of Adan Yabaal could deal a serious blow to the morale of government troops and weaken their hold in the broader Middle Shabelle region.
The town’s location has made it a logistical and command hub for military efforts aimed at flushing out militants from surrounding districts.
This latest development comes amid growing concerns about the resilience of Al-Shabaab, which has intensified attacks in central and southern Somalia despite suffering battlefield losses and increased drone strikes targeting its leadership. Somali military officials have yet to issue an official statement on the situation.
Efforts to re-establish communication with field commanders in the area are ongoing, with the telecom network reportedly down since early morning. The Federal Government, which has made the fight against Al-Shabaab a cornerstone of its security agenda, is likely to face mounting pressure to respond decisively and recover the lost town.
