Mogadishu, Somalia — In a vibrant ceremony held on Thursday in Mogadishu, former Somali Prime Minister and presidential hopeful Abdi Farah Shirdon (Saacid) officially unveiled his new political platform, the Nagaad Party, marking his return to the political spotlight with an ambitious national agenda.
The event drew a large crowd of supporters, civil society figures, and political observers, all gathered to witness the launch of what Shirdon described as a “new political vision rooted in dialogue, development, and unity.”
During his keynote address, Shirdon underscored the urgent need for inclusive politics and emphasized the importance of national reconciliation and stability. He praised Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre’s recent visit to the conflict-prone city of Las Anod, calling it “a vital step for the country’s unity.”
The visit, which aimed to ease tensions and promote dialogue in the contested Sool region, was widely seen as a confidence-building gesture by the federal government.
Shirdon also voiced his full support for the Somali National Army (SNA) in its ongoing operations against the Al-Shabaab militant group, saying, “Our forces are the backbone of our sovereignty. The sacrifices made by our soldiers in the fight against terrorism must be honored with lasting peace and real reforms.”
The Nagged Party, which means “awakening” in Somali, aims to attract a broad coalition of youth, professionals, and citizens who feel underrepresented in Somalia’s current political landscape.
Shirdon hinted at a nationwide mobilization campaign in the coming weeks, promising to unveil his full political platform ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Abdi Farah Shirdon previously served as Prime Minister from 2012 to 2013 during the early days of the current federal system. Known for his soft-spoken demeanor and reformist rhetoric, his return adds a notable voice to Somalia’s evolving political field as preparations begin for future national elections.
