MOGADISHU, Somalia – The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has a new commander after Marine Corps General Michael E. Langley formally handed over leadership to Air Force General Dagvin R.M. Anderson.
The Change of Command ceremony took place at Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart, Germany, the headquarters of AFRICOM, and was presided over by Admiral Christopher Grady, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Adm Grady said AFRICOM played a vital role in protecting US interests and building partnerships across the continent. He highlighted Africa’s demographic and economic growth, but also warned of mounting challenges.
“The region covered by US AFRICOM has a rapidly growing economy and a young population that offers a democratic dividend,” he said.
He added: “At the same time, it is a theatre where global competitors test our resolve, violent extremist organisations seek sanctuary, and instability spreads beyond the continent.”
Gen Anderson assumes command at a time when the US faces pressure to support African partners against insurgent groups in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa, while also addressing growing strategic competition from global rivals.
