MOGADISHU, Somalia – Kenya is renewing its push to mediate between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Jubaland leader Ahmed Mohamed Islam “Madobe,” amid heightened political tensions ahead of Somalia’s 2026 elections.
The two leaders have had a fractious relationship for years, with disputes between Mogadishu and Kismayo previously sparking deadly clashes in Raaskambooni, Lower Jubba, and in Beled Hawo, Gedo.
Diplomatic sources say Nairobi’s efforts could lead to a direct meeting between President Hassan Sheikh and Mr Madobe. The mediation comes at a sensitive time, with Somalia facing disputed constitutional amendments and an unsettled electoral process. Analysts warn that further divisions could undermine the stability of the federal system.
Speculation about progress grew after reports claimed the two leaders had recently spoken by phone. Somalia’s presidency dismissed those reports as “fake.”
Officials in Kismayo confirmed to Arlaadi Media Network that Kenya was indeed leading mediation efforts but said no breakthrough had been achieved. They accused Villa Somalia of spreading “false information to mislead the public.” The Somali presidency has not commented on the claims.
With less than two years before elections, political observers say reconciliation between Somalia’s federal government and Jubaland will be crucial in preventing renewed conflict and ensuring a credible political process.
