MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia has inaugurated a new container terminal at Mogadishu’s main seaport, a move officials say will expand the country’s maritime capacity and improve trade links.

The facility, opened by Ports and Marine Transport Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi Mohamed Nur and port manager Ahmed Mohamed Yusuf, known as Americo, increases the port’s handling capacity from 150,000 to 250,000 containers a year.

The terminal is equipped with modern cranes and reach stackers, which authorities say will speed up operations and reduce congestion at the busy port.

Alongside the inauguration, work also began on the construction of a new headquarters for the port, part of a wider effort by the government to modernise the country’s maritime infrastructure.

Mogadishu’s port is a key gateway for Somalia’s imports and exports and plays a central role in the country’s economic recovery after decades of conflict.
