BUUR HAKABA, Somalia – Somalia’s South West state President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed aka Laftagareen has officially opened a new airport in Buur Hakaba of Bay region in a bid to improve regional connectivity and support local economic development.
The airport project was realised through collaboration between the South West State authorities and the local community. Officials say the facility is expected to facilitate travel, enhance trade, and provide a boost to businesses in the region.
Among those attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony was Somalia’s Ambassador to Tanzania and the East African Community, Ilyas Ali Hassan, alongside regional officials and community leaders.
President Laftagareen emphasised the importance of local participation in development projects, saying the airport “is not only a gateway for travel but also a catalyst for investment and progress” in Buur Hakaba.
Historical and Economic Significance
Buur Hakaba has historically been a centre for agriculture and trade in southern Somalia. The town’s strategic position has long connected interior regions with Somalia’s coastal cities, making it an important hub for commerce and social activity.
Local authorities have welcomed the new airport, highlighting its potential to create new opportunities for commerce, tourism, and the delivery of essential services.
They say the facility could become a key hub for both passenger and cargo flights, integrating Buur Hakaba more closely into Somalia’s transport network.
Nevertheless, the inauguration comes as Somalia’s South West state continues to prioritise infrastructure development to drive economic growth and regional integration, reflecting broader efforts to stabilise and develop the country’s key urban centres.
