MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s cabinet has approved a series of new education and research agreements with three countries — Uganda, Qatar and Algeria — as part of efforts to boost learning opportunities and academic cooperation.
The deals were signed off during a cabinet meeting in Mogadishu on Thursday, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi. Ministers backed three memoranda of understanding proposed by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Learning.
The agreements include plans for closer collaboration on basic education with Uganda, university-level partnerships with Qatar, and joint research and higher education programmes with Algeria.
Officials said the move is aimed at strengthening Somalia’s education system, which has struggled for decades due to conflict and limited resources.
During the same session, ministers were also briefed by the security and defence ministries on the latest developments in the country’s fight against Al-Shabaab militants.
