MOGADISHU,S Somalia – The Somali National Army (SNA) has issued a strong warning to individuals and businesses against the unauthorized use of its military insignia, uniforms, and equipment, describing the practice as illegal and punishable under military law.
In a statement released on Friday, the SNA Command said it had observed a growing number of cases involving civilians and traders using or selling items that belong exclusively to the army.
The military urged all individuals to “completely refrain from using the equipment, emblems, and symbols of the Somali National Army,” including uniforms, ranks, and other distinctive identifiers.
“Anyone found unlawfully using these materials or insignia will face legal action in accordance with the military code,” the statement read.
The warning also extended to garage owners and mechanics, who were specifically prohibited from repainting, repairing, or housing army vehicles without formal authorization from the SNA. The Command emphasized that any garage found servicing or modifying military vehicles without permission “will face severe legal consequences.”
The SNA further cautioned business operators against trading or displaying military-related items such as uniforms, camouflage patterns, insignia, or other equipment associated with the army.
Authorities say the directive aims to preserve the integrity of the armed forces and prevent criminal misuse of military symbols.
Military officials did not specify whether recent incidents had prompted the warning, but observers note that impersonation of security forces has been a recurring concern amid Somalia’s ongoing security operations across the country.
