MOGADISHU, Somalia — In a move seen as a major boost for Somalia’s development ambitions, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Hormuud Salaam Foundation (HSF) have inked a landmark partnership agreement in Mogadishu to drive inclusive economic growth and youth empowerment.
The new collaboration aims to expand opportunities in technology, entrepreneurship, agriculture, and job creation — key pillars for Somalia’s economic recovery and long-term stability.
Senior government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Jibril Abdirashid, several cabinet ministers, and representatives from UNDP, Hormuud Salaam Foundation, Salaam Somali Bank, and Hormuud Telecom, attended the signing ceremony.
Under the deal, HSF will finance the initiative, Hormuud Telecom will spearhead digital innovation, and Salaam Somali Bank will provide access to Islamic financing for young entrepreneurs.
Lionel Laurens, UNDP’s Resident Representative in Somalia, described the partnership as “a historic step forward,” emphasizing its potential to create meaningful change in people’s lives. “This collaboration brings together innovation, investment, and impact,” Laurens said.
Abdullahi Nur Osman, Chairman of Hormuud Salaam Foundation, noted that Somalia holds immense potential for growth. “With the right partnerships and commitment, Somalia’s economy can thrive,” he said, underscoring the private sector’s vital role in driving progress.
Representatives from Hormuud Telecom and Salaam Somali Bank echoed that message, describing the program as a community-centered initiative designed to unlock Somali talent and strengthen economic resilience.
Government ministers welcomed the project, calling it a timely intervention that will boost youth employment and stimulate entrepreneurship nationwide.
Deputy Prime Minister Abdirashid commended both UNDP and HSF for their commitment to sustainable development. “Every year, thousands of young Somalis graduate full of promise but face limited job opportunities,” he said. “Partnerships like this fill that gap — and Hormuud Salaam Foundation continues to set the standard in creating real opportunities for Somali youth.”
