MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia and the United Kingdom struck an upbeat tone on Wednesday as the British Embassy hosted the 2025 King’s Birthday celebration in the heart of Mogadishu, drawing senior officials and diplomats to an evening focused on friendship and future cooperation.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre headlined the event, joining UK Ambassador Charles King and other dignitaries in marking King Charles III’s official birthday — a traditional annual occasion for British missions worldwide.
In his keynote address, Ambassador King spoke of a partnership that has matured through years of collaboration on security, governance, humanitarian support, and development.
He described UK–Somalia relations as anchored in “deep trust and genuine mutual respect,” adding that both nations share a clear vision for long-term stability and prosperity.
He ended on a ceremonial note, declaring: “Long live the UK–Somalia friendship, long live His Majesty King Charles III.”
Prime Minister Barre, reflecting on the King’s global profile, praised Charles III’s commitment to issues that resonate strongly in Somalia — climate action, sustainable development, and community empowerment.
He expressed hope that the close relationship between the two nations will continue to strengthen, wishing the monarch good health and continued leadership.
This year’s celebration offered more than diplomatic protocol; it signaled a reaffirmation of the UK’s engagement in Somalia at a pivotal moment, with ongoing efforts to support security reforms, economic growth, and resilience against climate-related challenges.
