MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s Ambassador to Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and the East African Community (EAC), Ilyas Ali Hassan, has held meetings with senior diplomats in Kinshasa aimed at strengthening regional cooperation.
According to Somali diplomatic officials, Ambassador Ilyas met Morocco’s Ambassador to the DRC, Rachid Agassim, for discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations and exploring areas of diplomatic collaboration.
The meeting comes as both nations signal interest in expanding their engagement across Africa, particularly in political cooperation and economic development.
In a separate engagement, Ambassador Ilyas held a courtesy meeting with Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the DRC, Mekuria Getachew.
Somali officials say the discussions centred on Somalia’s broader efforts to reinforce partnerships within the Horn of Africa and beyond, as well as ongoing regional matters.
Somalia has in recent years increased its diplomatic footprint across East and Central Africa, coinciding with its entry into the East African Community in 2023.
Ambassador Ilyas, who represents Somalia in multiple countries from his base in Dar es Salaam, has been at the centre of this outreach, holding regular engagements with regional governments and diplomatic missions.
The latest meetings in Kinshasa form part of a wider push by Mogadishu to strengthen political cooperation, expand trade opportunities, and build alliances across the African continent.
