MOGADISHU, Somalia — In a milestone for Somalia’s international relations, Germany has officially recognized the Somali Diplomatic Passport, granting Somali diplomats full entry and residency privileges. The decision was published in the German Federal Gazette (Bundesanzeiger) on December 1, 2025.
Previously, the Somali Diplomatic Passport was only recognized for departure-related procedures, which limited its practical use for international travel. With this change, Somali diplomats and officials can now move more freely in Germany, strengthening both personal and professional ties.
“This recognition reflects the hard work Somalia has put into modernizing its travel documents and national identification systems,” said the Immigration and Citizenship Agency of Somalia. “It is also a testament to the growing trust and cooperation between our nations.”
Over the past decade, Somalia has invested heavily in improving the security and reliability of its passports, aiming to meet international standards and give its officials smoother access abroad. Germany’s decision is part of a broader trend among European countries acknowledging Somalia’s progress in governance, migration management, and diplomatic engagement.
For Somali diplomats, this development is more than a technical upgrade — it represents recognition of their country’s efforts on the world stage and opens doors for deeper collaboration in politics, trade, and cultural exchange.
The Immigration and Citizenship Agency expressed gratitude to the German government and partner organizations and reaffirmed its commitment to expanding recognition of Somali passports worldwide.
