MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Dhaay on Friday held a bilateral meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, to discuss ways to strengthen relations between the two countries and expand cooperation across key sectors.

According to a statement from Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the talks focused on enhancing collaboration in trade, education and health, as well as exploring opportunities to broaden the long-standing partnership between Mogadishu and New Delhi.

Both sides agreed to maintain close diplomatic engagement and implement practical follow-up measures aimed at translating their strategic partnership into concrete results that support Somalia’s development and sovereignty, the statement said.

“The meeting reflects growing efforts by Somalia to deepen international partnerships as part of its broader development and foreign policy agenda,” Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Nevertheless, the meeting came several weeks after the India government reaffirmed its respect for Somalia’s sovereignty and unity, following Israel’s controversial recognition of Somaliland, a move that sparked global criticism and renewed concerns over Somalia’s territorial integrity.
