MOGADISHU, Somalia – Britain is stepping up support for Somalia’s security forces, giving them new tools and skills to fight terrorism and connect with local communities, the British ambassador said Thursday, Arlaadi Media Network reports.
At the closing of a five-day strategic communications training course in Mogadishu, British Ambassador Charles King emphasized the importance of empowering Somali forces to respond effectively to extremist propaganda.
The program, run by the UK Embassy and the UK Military Advisory Group Somalia, included a handover of communications equipment, giving participants the tools they need to improve outreach and operational coordination.
“This isn’t just about messaging — it’s about giving Somalia’s security forces the tools they need to protect their people and push back against terror narratives,” King said. “The UK is committed to helping Somalia build stronger, more capable institutions that can defend communities and keep the country secure.”
For local officers, the training is more than theoretical. “When our messages are clear and coordinated, our people are more likely to stay informed and safe,” one Somali officer said. “These tools make a real difference on the ground.”
The UK has been a consistent partner for Somalia, investing millions in capacity-building programs, logistics, and equipment. Since 2021, London has contributed tens of millions of dollars to support Somali forces, helping provide non-lethal supplies such as rations, medical support, tents, and communications gear. Programs like Thursday’s training are part of a broader strategy to help Somali forces operate more effectively and build trust with local communities.
Somalia faces persistent threats from extremist groups, regional smuggling networks, and propaganda campaigns that seek to destabilize the country. By equipping its security forces with both skills and technology, the UK hopes to strengthen Somalia’s ability to respond to these challenges.
“Strategic communications isn’t just about talking — it’s about building confidence and protecting lives,” King said. “Through training, equipment, and partnership, we aim to give Somali forces the edge they need to keep their communities safe.”
The week-long program reflects a growing focus on capacity-building and collaboration, showing that even in conflict-affected areas, empowering local forces with the right tools can have a tangible impact on security and community resilience.
