MOGADISHU, Somalia — European Union and Somali naval officials have on Wednesday met in Mogadishu to discuss ways to boost maritime security and cooperation, EU Training Mission in Somalia announced in a statement seen by Arlaadi Media.
Brigadier General Elio Manes, commander of the EU Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM), and Brigadier General Abdiwahab Abdullahi Omar, head of the Somali Navy and Coast Guard, held talks at the EU Delegation in Somalia. EU ambassador Francesca Di Mauro was also present.
The discussions focused on training and capacity-building programs, improving coordination between Somali forces and the EU, and addressing security challenges in Somali waters.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to promoting stability and sustainable security development along Somalia’s coastline.
Piracy and maritime crime have long been a concern in the region, which lies along key international shipping routes.
EU missions, including Operation ATALANTA and EUCAP Somalia, have provided support to Somali maritime forces to enhance their ability to protect both local communities and international trade.
Somalia’s coastline stretches over 3,000 kilometres, supporting fishing communities and critical shipping lanes. Officials say stronger cooperation with international partners is essential to ensuring safety and economic stability in the region.
