MOGADISHU – Students from Turkish Maarif International Schools in Somalia have taken first place in the computer science and artificial intelligence category at one of Africa’s largest science exhibitions, organisers said.

The award was announced at Science Fest Africa 2026, held in Abidjan, where participants from 27 countries showcased hundreds of student-led innovations ranging from robotics to environmental solutions.

In a statement, the schools said the victory reflected “dedication, knowledge and strong academic guidance,” crediting both students and teachers for the result. The institution also thanked the Turkish Maarif Foundation, which oversees its international network of schools, as well as partners supporting education initiatives in Somalia.

The competition, widely regarded as a platform for nurturing young scientific talent across the continent, has grown in prominence as African governments and private institutions invest more in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Organisers say the event aims to connect students with emerging technologies and encourage cross-border collaboration.

Somalia, which has been rebuilding its education sector after decades of conflict, has in recent years seen a rise in private and internationally affiliated schools focusing on science and technology. Education advocates say such achievements highlight the potential of Somali youth to compete on a continental stage despite ongoing challenges, including limited infrastructure and funding gaps.

Officials from the participating schools described the win as a signal of growing confidence among Somali students in advanced fields such as artificial intelligence, adding that similar programmes could help position the country’s young population for future opportunities in the global digital economy.
