MOGADISHU, Somalia — A senior United Nations official has called on Somali authorities to accelerate efforts toward economic self-reliance and reduce dependence on foreign aid, as global development priorities shift and funding pressures mount, Arlaadi Media Network reports.

Speaking at a media briefing in Mogadishu on Monday, UN Assistant Secretary-General Shoko Noda, who heads the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Crisis Bureau, said Somalia must prioritize long-term stability by strengthening its institutions and expanding private sector participation.

The briefing, organized by UNDP Somalia and attended by representatives from Arlaadi Media Network, followed Noda’s recent mission to the country, where she assessed ongoing recovery and governance efforts.

Noda outlined key priorities including stabilization, recovery, and the reinforcement of state institutions, describing them as essential pillars for building resilience in Somalia.

“With global aid commitments declining, it is critical for Somalia to accelerate efforts to reduce reliance on external assistance,” she said, emphasizing the need for sustainable, locally driven solutions.

She stressed that greater private sector engagement would play a central role in supporting economic growth and institutional resilience, helping the country transition from humanitarian dependence to long-term development.

The UN official also underscored the importance of locally led initiatives, saying they are vital for restoring dignity and ensuring durable progress.

Noda reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s path toward stability, self-reliance, and inclusive development.

Somalia has long faced complex challenges, including insecurity, climate shocks, and economic fragility, leaving it heavily reliant on international aid. However, officials and development partners increasingly emphasize the need for sustainable strategies to secure the country’s future.
