MOGADISHU — Somalia’s federal government has signed an agreement with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to conduct feasibility studies and design work for the first phase of a major road project in Hargeisa, officials said.
The agreement covers the initial 23-kilometre section of a planned 45-kilometre road network under the $275 million Nagaad programme, which aims to improve infrastructure and connectivity in Somaliland’s capital.
Somalia’s Minister of Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing, Ayub Ismail Yusuf, said the first phase will also include the design of a major bridge in Hargeisa, with the opening stage expected to cost nearly $20 million.
The minister thanked development partners and Somalia’s federal member states for supporting the initiative, which he said would contribute to urban development and improved transport links.
The project is part of broader efforts to expand infrastructure investment in Somalia, where decades of conflict, limited public investment and climate-related challenges have affected roads and other essential services.
UNOPS has supported infrastructure and development programmes in Somalia, including projects focused on transport, public services and institutional capacity-building.
The agreement comes as Somalia seeks to attract greater international investment and strengthen cooperation with development partners to address infrastructure gaps across the country.
