GAROWE, Somalia — A delegation from the African Development Bank visited project sites in Somalia’s Puntland region as part of efforts to strengthen livestock infrastructure, improve access to animal fodder and build the resilience of pastoral communities.
The delegation met officials from Puntland’s Ministry of Livestock and Animal Husbandry, the Ministry of Planning and other government institutions during the visit.
The work is being carried out under the Build Resilience for Food and Nutrition Security (BREFONS) programme, which is financed by the African Development Bank. The programme is designed to improve resilience to food insecurity and climate change while strengthening agricultural and pastoral production systems.
In Puntland, BREFONS includes investment in livestock infrastructure, fodder supplies and equipment, alongside training intended to help communities better withstand drought and other climate-related shocks. The programme has also included plans for livestock infrastructure and the supply of native and improved fodder seeds in Puntland.
The African Development Bank has said its broader resilience programmes in Somalia aim to improve access to water, pasture and livestock services while strengthening the livelihoods of pastoral and agro-pastoral communities.
The latest field visit brought together development and government officials to review implementation and ongoing efforts to support livestock-dependent communities in Puntland.
