MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama met with UNDP Somalia Resident Representative Christophoros Politis to discuss efforts to accelerate the country’s development, strengthen public institutions and improve resilience, according to UNDP.
Politis said the meeting covered Somalia’s transformation agenda, institutional strengthening, land and water management and development financing.
UNDP has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia’s government as it pursues a more resilient and sustainable development path. Politis, who recently took up his post as UNDP’s new resident representative, has described Somalia as being at an important stage in its development and said the agency would work with government, civil society and the private sector to support longer-term development gains.
The discussions come as Somalia seeks to strengthen state institutions and expand its capacity to finance development priorities while dealing with climate-related pressures, humanitarian needs and infrastructure gaps.
Land and water management are particularly important for Somalia, where droughts and floods have repeatedly disrupted livelihoods and placed pressure on food and water security.
Development financing was also highlighted as the government seeks to mobilize resources for longer-term projects and reduce dependence on humanitarian assistance.
The UNDP has maintained a broad development partnership with Somalia covering governance, economic development, climate resilience, community recovery and institutional capacity. Its Somalia Joint Fund provides a platform for coordinating development support with the Somali government and international partners.
Politis said UNDP remained committed to helping turn Somalia’s development ambitions into lasting results for its people.
