MOGADISHU, Somalia — Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama, held talks with Qatar’s Ambassador to Somalia, Dr. Abdullah bin Salem Al-Nuaimi, in Mogadishu as the two countries continue to deepen political, development and institutional cooperation.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest, according to Somalia’s House of the People. Qatar’s state news agency also reported that the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation.
Jama thanked Qatar for its continued support to Somalia, particularly its stated backing for the country’s sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity. Qatar has repeatedly reaffirmed support for Somalia’s state institutions, security and stability in official statements this year.
The Speaker also highlighted Qatari development assistance in Somalia, saying projects supported by Doha have contributed to essential services and broader national development.
The engagement comes amid a series of high-level contacts between the two governments. In May, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met Ambassador Al-Nuaimi in Mogadishu and discussed security, political development and national reconstruction, while also thanking Qatar for support in infrastructure, humanitarian assistance and state-building.
Qatar and Somalia have also expanded cooperation beyond political and security affairs. In December 2025, the two countries held the inaugural meeting of their Joint Supreme Committee in Doha, where they signed agreements and memorandums covering customs cooperation, youth, agriculture and food security, and cultural cooperation.
More recently, a senior Qatari delegation visited Mogadishu in August for discussions related to investment in food production and healthcare. Somalia’s Prime Minister’s Office said the visit also involved a multi-sector agreement with the Ministry of Planning, Investment and Economic Development.
Humanitarian cooperation has remained another part of the relationship. In February, Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency and Qatar Charity launched a food assistance programme targeting up to 6,000 drought-affected families in Banadir, with Qatar continuing to provide humanitarian and development assistance through government and charitable channels.
Qatar Charity said in January that it had implemented 990 humanitarian and development projects in Somalia during 2025, benefiting more than 528,000 people across sectors including food security, education, economic empowerment and social welfare.
The latest meeting between the parliamentary speaker and Qatar’s ambassador therefore comes against a broader backdrop of expanding Somalia-Qatar engagement, with both sides seeking to develop cooperation across government institutions, development, humanitarian affairs and other areas of mutual interest.
