MOGADISHU, Somalia — European Union Ambassador to Somalia László Máthé met with Somali media representatives in Mogadishu on Wednesday to discuss the EU’s partnership with Somalia, press freedom and measures to improve the safety and protection of journalists.

The discussions focused on the role of independent media in strengthening democratic institutions, the challenges facing journalists and the need to protect press freedom in Somalia.

Participants also highlighted the importance of expanding women’s participation and representation in the media sector, including efforts to promote greater inclusion and equal opportunities for women journalists.

The meeting comes as Somalia continues to navigate challenges related to media freedom, journalist safety and the development of independent media institutions. Journalists play a key role in informing the public, scrutinising government activities and contributing to political accountability.

The EU Mission in Somalia said the discussions formed part of its broader engagement with Somali media and its partnership with the country.

Strengthening media independence and protecting journalists remain important issues for Somalia’s democratic development, particularly as the country works to build accountable institutions and expand public participation in political and social affairs.
