MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia and Oman have discussed expanding bilateral economic cooperation, with particular emphasis on maritime connectivity, trade facilitation and transport infrastructure, as the two countries seek to strengthen their commercial relationship.
Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met on Saturday with Oman’s newly appointed ambassador to Somalia, Salim bin Habib Al Umairi, in Mogadishu for talks on strengthening diplomatic relations and identifying new opportunities for economic cooperation.
The discussions focused on improving maritime connections, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers, and strengthening links between ports to generate economic opportunities for both countries.
Maritime Connectivity at the Centre of Discussions
Port cooperation and maritime transport featured prominently in the meeting, reflecting the importance of sea routes to trade and economic development in both countries.
The two sides explored opportunities to improve connections between their ports and facilitate the movement of commercial goods and transport services.
For Somalia, stronger maritime links could support efforts to expand international trade, improve logistics services and attract investment into its port infrastructure.
Oman, which occupies a strategic position along major international shipping routes in the Arabian Peninsula, maintains important maritime and commercial connections across the Indian Ocean.
Expanding Economic and Diplomatic Relations
The meeting also underscored the two countries’ interest in broadening cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic relations to include trade, investment and transport development.
Somalia has increasingly sought to strengthen economic partnerships with countries in the Gulf and the wider Middle East as it works to develop its infrastructure and expand access to regional and international markets.
Oman’s engagement with Somalia could offer opportunities for cooperation in maritime transport, logistics and commercial exchanges, particularly given the geographical importance of the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean.
The appointment of a new Omani ambassador provides an additional diplomatic channel for advancing bilateral engagement.
Shared Economic Opportunities
The discussions reflect a broader interest in turning longstanding diplomatic relations between Mogadishu and Muscat into practical economic cooperation.
Improved maritime connectivity and stronger port-to-port links could help facilitate trade, reduce logistical barriers and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
No specific agreements, investment commitments or implementation timelines were announced following the meeting.
