ARUSHA – Somalia’s representatives were sworn in by the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in Arusha, Tanzania on Monday, marking a step forward in the country’s participation in the East African Community (EAC).
Somali Ambassador to Tanzania and the EAC, Ilyas Ali Hassan, called the event a political milestone, highlighting the country’s commitment to regional cooperation, integration, peace and development.
“This is a proud moment for Somalia,” Ilyas said, thanking President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for supporting the country’s involvement in the bloc.
He added: “The swearing-in underscores Somalia’s efforts to strengthen its role in regional policymaking and collaboration within East Africa”.
The EALA is the legislative arm of the EAC, which includes Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Somalia joined the East African Community in 2016, seeking closer economic and political integration with the region.
