MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, welcomed Francesca Sanders, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador for Human Rights and Deputy Permanent Representative in Geneva, to Mogadishu on Tuesday for a key diplomatic meeting focused on human rights progress and international cooperation.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Barre highlighted the UK’s support for several critical initiatives, including the possible removal of Somalia’s decades-old arms embargo, ongoing debt relief negotiations, and backing for the country’s return to the United Nations Human Rights Council. Barre described Britain as a “steadfast partner in Somalia’s journey towards stability, democracy, and human rights reform.”
The two leaders discussed Somalia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its legal and human rights frameworks, improve governance, and bolster the protection of vulnerable populations, particularly women and children affected by conflict. Barre also emphasized Somalia’s progress in aligning national laws with international human rights standards, an effort that has drawn praise from international observers.
In a symbolic gesture of gratitude, the Prime Minister presented Ambassador Sanders with an official certificate of appreciation, acknowledging the UK’s continued diplomatic and humanitarian support. The certificate ceremony was attended by senior Somali officials and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighting the high-level nature of the visit.
Experts say the meeting signals Somalia’s growing ambition to rebuild its international reputation, attract foreign investment, and strengthen ties with global partners as it navigates challenges including security concerns, economic recovery, and human rights reforms.
