CAIRO, Egypt – Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali met with his Egyptian counterpart, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, to discuss ways to deepen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation across economic, security, and development sectors. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the second ministerial meeting of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, held in Cairo from 19 to 20 December.
During the talks, both ministers highlighted the importance of practical partnerships that contribute to sustainable development and long-term stability in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa region. Minister Abdi Ali welcomed Egypt’s ongoing support for Somalia, affirming his country’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and security cooperation, institutional capacity-building, and regional initiatives aimed at peace and stability.
“Somalia values the continuous support of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and we remain committed to deepening our cooperation in diplomacy, security, and institutional development,” Abdi Ali said. “Collective regional efforts are essential to ensure lasting peace and progress.”
Dr. Abdelatty described the talks as part of a positive trajectory in Egyptian-Somali relations, stressing Cairo’s commitment to expanding its strategic partnership with Somalia. He noted that Egypt’s planned relocation of its embassy to Mogadishu is expected to enhance diplomatic engagement and facilitate closer coordination between the two countries.
The meeting also addressed regional security developments. Both ministers reaffirmed the need for continued international support for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), underlining its critical role in stabilizing the country and countering extremist threats. They also emphasised the importance of intensified regional and international coordination to combat terrorism and violent extremism, which continue to pose challenges to peace and security across the Horn of Africa.
The Cairo talks come amid broader efforts by African and Arab states to strengthen cooperation on security and economic development. Somalia and Egypt have maintained close diplomatic ties for decades, with Cairo historically supporting Mogadishu in areas ranging from governance and military capacity-building to infrastructure and humanitarian assistance.
The ministers concluded the meeting by affirming their commitment to advancing a mutually beneficial partnership, while calling for sustained regional collaboration to address security challenges and support Somalia’s path towards stability and growth.
