MOGADISHU, Somalia – Sweden has officially appointed Hans Henric Lundqvist as its new Ambassador to Somalia, succeeding outgoing ambassador Joachim Waern, who held the position from August 2023 to 2025.
Lundqvist, born in 1974, brings with him an extensive diplomatic background and a strong track record of representing Sweden in complex international environments.
Since 2020, he has served as Sweden’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, where his mandate also covered relations with Djibouti, the African Union (AU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
Over the course of his career, Ambassador Lundqvist has held postings in Sudan, Afghanistan, and Moldova, in addition to serving in various senior roles at Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
His wide-ranging experience across Africa, Europe, and Asia highlights his capacity to navigate regional security, development, and diplomatic cooperation issues.
The appointment signals Sweden’s continued commitment to strengthening ties with Somalia and supporting regional stability.
Ambassador Lundqvist is expected to build on the progress achieved by his predecessor, deepening bilateral relations and expanding Sweden’s engagement across political, economic, and humanitarian sectors.
