Shock Defections Rock Somalia’s Opposition Alliance Ahead of 2026 Elections

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s political opposition is in turmoil as several high-profile figures have left the Somali Salvation Forum (SSF) to form a new bloc, a move that could reshape the country’s political landscape ahead of the 2026 elections.

Political analysts including Ahmed Haddi Mohamed say “the split underscores growing divisions and a scramble for influence within the opposition”.

Among those leaving the Forum are former House Speakers Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman and Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden, former Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, and ex-Information Minister Dahir Mohamud Geelle.

Their departure weakens the SSF’s influence and highlights a fragmented opposition struggling to present a united front against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration.

Observers say the move signals strategic realignments as Somali politicians jockey for position ahead of the next elections. Tensions have escalated further with accusations of threats against opposition leaders, a development some interpret as an attempt to intimidate critics.

The split comes as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) extended the political party registration period, creating opportunities for the newly formed bloc.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s registration for the “one person, one vote” pilot election in Mogadishu adds another layer of tension, with critics accusing the government of pushing ahead on its preferred electoral plan despite opposition objections.

As Somalia approaches the heavily contested upcoming 2026 elections, political analysts firmly warn that the fragmented opposition could struggle to mount an effective challenge, while the ruling administration positions itself to consolidate power.
