MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Ministry of Defence has welcomed the completion of the first training program for Egyptian Armed Forces units, who are expected to join the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The deployment marks one of Egypt’s first major contributions to the mission, which aims to strengthen Somali security forces and stabilize areas affected by Al-Shabaab and other extremist groups.
“The participation of Egyptian troops reflects Egypt’s growing role in supporting stabilisation and security efforts in Somalia,” the Ministry said in a statement.
Officials emphasized that the move demonstrates Egypt’s commitment to enhancing the capacity of the Somali National Army under the new AUSSOM framework.
The Ministry also acknowledged the African Union and international partners for their support in reinforcing Somalia’s national security institutions.
However, it remains unclear where within Somalia the Egyptian forces will be deployed. Ethiopia, which had been expected to contribute troops to AUSSOM, has reportedly expressed opposition to Egypt’s participation in the mission, citing ongoing disputes over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a source of longstanding tension in the region.
The AUSSOM mission is part of the African Union’s broader effort to stabilize Somalia following decades of conflict and insecurity, particularly in regions where Al-Shabaab maintains a strong presence.
Analysts say Egypt’s involvement may signal growing regional influence, but the uncertainty over troop deployment highlights the challenges facing multilateral efforts in the Horn of Africa.
